How does one learn How to Make it in America? That’s the question that intrigues few and leaves many distraught. HBO’s series How to Make it in America demonstrates the persistent drive one must have to answer such a question…

The show follows the lives of Ben Epstein and his best friend Cam Calderon as they struggle to make it in the competitive New York fashion scene. Submersed in the New York culture, the guys use their street knowledge and connections to make it to the top with their clothing line “Crisp”. With Ben’s talent and Cam’s charisma, the two men stay consistent in doing what is necessary to fulfill their version of the American dream.

The show airs Sundays at 10:30 p.m, only on HBO.

“WE MAKE CLOTHES AND OTHER STUFF LIKE THAT.”

The Band of Outsiders quote really does sound like something one of the companies designers would truly state. However, Band of Outsiders do make “clothes, and other stuff like that,” produced with the fabrics and materials that make any true gentleman feel loose and relaxed, while at the same time look classy and professional. The company looks as if they draw their inspiration from Country Clubs, the East Coast, Sailing (along with other preppy east coast outdoor activities), and a pinch of the city nightlife. The Band Of Outsiders Store provides almost every fashion necessity, a Gentleman who has a little “Outsider” in them, would need. The store includes bowties, blazers, button ups, coats and jackets, polos, sweaters, ties, and a lot more “other stuff,” as they like to put it.

Trends come and go, but certain cocktails have the reliability of staying powerful through time. I am talking about the pure class of the Manhattan. A popular history suggests that the drink originated at the Manhattan Club in New York City in the early 1870s, where it was invented by Dr. Iain Marshall. The Manhattan has lasted ever since with its combined whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters.

Commonly used whiskeys include rye, Canadian whiskey, Bourban, blended whiskey, and Tennessee whiskey. Garnished with a Maraschino cherry, and you are ready to escalate to the skylines of Manhattan! Feel free to experiment with ratio and brands that you like, but here at the Gentlemen’s Lodge, it is served like this:

Ingredients:

Crown Royal – 2 ½ oz.

Sweet Vermouth – ¾ oz.

Bitters – 1-3 dashes

Maraschino cherry- 1-3

Shake and strain ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice for a truly cosmopolitan taste.
